About GDPR

The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is coming into force in the UK on the 25th May 2018, and will affect all organisations, including churches, which store personal information about individuals.

The Regulation is designed to give individuals more rights when it comes to how their information is gathered, stored and used. It will build on current Data Protection legislation to ensure that all organisations are acting transparently and fairly when it comes to personal information. The GDPR aims to ensure an individual’s right to make sure their data is held securely, correctly, and in a manner which is easily accessible and is under one of GDPR's six lawful bases, one of which is consent.

This regulation is a new legal framework from the European Union and won’t be affected by the UK leaving the EU. There is currently a new Data Protection Bill (2017) before Parliament, which will bring the UK’s own Data Protection legislation into line with GDPR. This Bill will come into force on the same day as GDPR: the 25th of May, 2018. You can read more about the Data Protection Bill here.
