Public Task

The lawful basis of ‘public task’ is mostly relevant to public authorities, but may also apply to churches as well. This may be especially true for Church of England and Catholic churches.

If you can demonstrate that you are holding or processing data in order to serve the public interest, this is your lawful basis. For churches, an example might be keeping records of marriages, baptism, or burials. These may need to be kept for archiving or legal purposes, and so you would not need consent in order to do so.

You must demonstrate that it is truly in the public interest or required by UK or EU law. For more information, see the ICO website.
